Wanting a study on “how to make them stop being subhumans” and knowing that’s nonexistent, so settling for one on Aristophanes

exceedingly dangerous to express non-oligarchical political opinions in Athens.

Okay, maybe you’re human and you just have an intuition for danger.

In general, no. The ladder causes mental illness and 99% of people have the unconscious instinct to push it over, so to speak. They align themselves with the forces of Capital because Capital realized pushing it over is a lucrative business. So what’s “dangerous” is both the suppliers and the demanders. It’s not precisely a top-down form of control, because to a great extent they give the people what they want.

It’s essentially a xanax industry. The ladder causes anxiety, and they quell that. People don’t like responsibility, that’s stressful. They’d rather be placid, blank.

If you want to be a responsible person then challenge the supplier-demander pact. I bet you won’t. The chances are that you are part of that very pact yourself. Such a relief when the ladder is pushed over, huh? You’re never going to get to heaven that way. “I’m feeling good as who I am, stress-free.” As long as everyone around them is putting in zero effort also they don’t feel like they’re doing anything wrong either, and that’s how they like it. That’s just their static personality, to want to dance together on the graves of those who are superior to them. You dare disrupt their festivities? Peggy Sue! Nice pigtails Peggy Sue, they look pretty on a pig. We should meet sometime so I can make pig-noises to your face. REEEETT!! REEEEEEK! Turned awayyyy from the gates of heavennn, time to hang your head and cryyyyy.

Anyway, I’m looking at a play of Aristophanes’ called Thesmophoriazusae, alternately known as Women at the Thesmophoria

they are locked in a bitter, ongoing quarrel with Euripides about the way he portrays them in his tragedies and the effect of this on their male relatives… The women’s complaint is thus not that Euripides lies, for they are by their own admission exactly what he says they are… Instead, the women object to Euripides’ willingness to publicize what are for them inconvenient truths

The Thesmophoria was a festival that was restricted to women. The details of the ceremony were kept a secret. So Aristophanes in this play is basically exposing them as liars. They only admit to each other that Euripides is right to portray them the way he does. This is Athenian culture, I’m not sure if it maps directly onto ours.

This is another mark of Aristophanes’ irreverence, staging a secret ritual in public. It also shows us the level of self-awareness of drama at that time, around 411 BC. It’s a play about a playwright and his audience.

Most, if not all, of those watching this play would’ve been men, and this is what Aristophanes was getting across about his predecessor Euripides

the suspicions the tragic poet has allegedly stirred up about the behaviour of their wives, daughters, and sisters are justified.

Now, I don’t think there are many parallels here. Ancient Athens was a vastly different time and place. This is just a historical document that we can study in a detached manner.

How’d this post begin again, something about certain things being dangerous to talk about? And that one usually identifies as the one who has to be careful rather than the one who another has to be careful around? A bunch of worthless, babbling whores who want people who talk about them to be silenced, in other words. Whoops, I said it! And everyone knows it’s the truth too. Are you enjoying this play-within-a-play, the Thesmophoriasusae? Only a quarter of his works survived to this day, I wonder why some and not others.

This is a counter-intuitive idea in the modern world

What the parabasis reveals is that the tragic poet’s plays are only a symptom of the larger cultural fact that men for some unspecified reason (into which there is apparently no need to pry) believe that women are ‘bad’.

What would follow from this if it were true? Half of humanity is–gasp!–immoral? I think they’d have to be strictly managed, much like any of the other savages need to be.

This is a form of racism to me, I can’t help it. It’s half of humanity we’re talking about here. What, is it dangerous to speak like Euripides? “Democracy” probably has something to do with that.

There’s probably some truth to this also

Despite Mika’s insinuation that Euripides puts only ‘bad’ women like Phaidra and Melanippe on stage… Phaidra is an innocent victim caught in a terrible situation, a characterization that could probably have been applied to Melanippe as well.

Remember who was a significant factor in preparing the conditions for the French Revolution. Were they interpreted as heroines?

“You better shut up about us, we control things around here!” How many pills are you on? You must be “pillpilled” so to speak.

All these different types that can be “found out” to be naturally immoral, and it’s dangerous to mention it. That’s the real meaning of practicing “intersectionality”- you can all be failures together.

YES, there is a conspiracy going on between the different shades of turds with eyeballs. Hopefully you’re not part of that, my angelic reader.

This play is really brilliant. It’s a step up from that primitive Selk’nam ritual I discussed involving the women pretending to be a terrible spirit in a hut before the men looked inside and discovered their secret.

“I don’t have a secret!”

That’s the point of the play, that even if you did have one you wouldn’t admit it, hence it’s the staging of a confidential ceremony where men weren’t allowed

Ha, I bet they don’t even admit it to each other these days, much less in public for all to witness.
